Guimaraes is a Portuguese town located in Braga district, North and sub-region of Ave (one of the subregions most industrialized in the countrie), with a population of 52 181 inhabitants spread over an urban area of 23.5 square kilometers, in 20 parishes and with a population of 2 223.9 sq \ km ². It is the seat of a municipality with 242.85 kilometers ² and 162 636 inhabitants (2008), subdivided into 69 parishes, with the majority of the population live in the city and its peripheral zone. It is bordered to the north by the municipality of Póvoa de Lanhoso, on the east by Fafe south by Felgueiras, Vizela and Santo Tirso, west by Vila Nova de Famalicão and west by Braga.
It is a historic city with a crucial role in the formation of Portugal, which already has more than a millennium since its formation, when it was designated as Vimaranes
